Taipei Becomes Google’s Largest AI Engineering Hub Outside the US

By Vivian Daniel

Google has expanded its global AI operations with the inauguration of its largest artificial intelligence (AI) hardware engineering centre outside the United States, located in Taipei, Taiwan.

According to a report of The Times of India, on 20 November 2025, the new hub will focus on AI infrastructure hardware, creating systems that will be deployed across Google’s data centres around the world.

The Google Cloud Vice President, Aamer Mahmood, highlighted the strategic importance of the facility, saying, “This is an investment in an ecosystem, a testament to Taiwan’s place as an important centre for global AI innovation.”

Taiwan’s government has underscored the initiative as evidence of the island’s vital role in the global technology supply chain.

President Lai Ching-te told Reuters that the centre affirms Taiwan’s position as a secure and reliable AI hub.

“Taiwan is not only a vital part of the global technological supply chain, but also a key hub for building secure and trustworthy AI,” he stated.

The hub is designed to strengthen Google’s AI infrastructure while leveraging Taiwan’s semiconductor industry, which is critical to AI and global technology growth. With this development, Google signals confidence in Taiwan as a strategic partner in the AI space, while diversifying its global operations beyond the US.

Responding to the latest development, the Taiwan Representative in Nigeria and Chief of Mission, Taipei Trade Office, Lagos, Nigeria, Andy Yih-Ping Liu, had this to say, “We, the people and government of Taiwan, have devoted ourselves for decades to developing the most advanced technology that’ll benefit the world. Google’s latest AI advancement project set up in Taiwan has once again showcased the trustworthiness and major contributions that the world would definitely need from Taiwan. We certainly like to share our advancement in high technology, especially the AI-related ones, with Nigeria. So that His Excellency President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, as well as His Excellency’s proclamation of making the Southeast of Nigeria become Taiwan of Africa, can be implemented in due course. We’re committed and fully prepared to work hand-in-hand with the Nigerian public and private sectors to promote mutually beneficial relations between Nigeria and Taiwan.”

The new AI engineering centre represents a major leap in innovation, offering opportunities for collaboration, technological exchange, and accelerated AI deployment across Google’s global services.
